How Geekoto Created the Fold-Flat GeekMod Softbox System
Most lighting modifiers are designed around the light they produce. The GeekMod system began with an equally important question: how could a professional softbox produce excellent light while taking up dramatically less room during transport and storage?
The answer became Geekoto’s fold-flat clamshell mount—a family-developed design engineered to open quickly, collapse without removing its rods, and store in a slim rectangular case.
A family company built around photography innovation
Geekoto is part of a family-owned group that includes Jiebao Technology and Triopo. Jiebao Technology is Geekoto’s parent company and the holder of the fold-flat mechanism’s patent. Geekoto’s founder is the oldest son of the family behind the company, connecting product development, manufacturing, and the customer-facing brand across generations.
The GeekMod system was designed through the company’s team in Grand Prairie, Texas, and manufactured through the family’s operation in Wenzhou, China. That direct connection between working photographers, product designers, engineers, and manufacturing made it possible to solve problems that would have been difficult to address through an off-the-shelf design.
The idea: a professional softbox that truly folds flat
Fast-opening softboxes were not new, but they still tended to collapse into bulky cylindrical packages. Geekoto set out to create a different structure: a modifier whose entire base could fold in half while the rods remained installed.
Other manufacturers were exploring superficially similar concepts, including SMDV. Geekoto’s design, however, followed its own earlier filing and used materially different engineering, including full metal construction rather than a plastic base. A patent challenge followed. According to Geekoto’s company records, the challenge did not succeed because Geekoto’s filing came first and the mechanisms were not the same.
Today, the system’s foldable softbox chuck is protected under U.S. Patent No. 12,411,391, assigned to Wenzhou Jiebao Technology Co., Ltd. The patent describes a two-part base and locking mechanism that form a complete ring when opened and stack together when folded, reducing the space required for storage and transport.
The hardest part was not the idea—it was making it move naturally
Turning a circular metal support into a reliable folding mechanism required more than adding a hinge. The rods needed to travel through the opening and closing motion without binding, twisting, or placing uncontrolled stress on the fabric and base.
The engineering team developed specialized channels that allow each rod base to move through its intended path as the modifier opens and folds. The geometry had to work repeatedly while preserving the shape of the light source.
GeekMod softboxes use 16 ribs to create a rounder, more parabolic form than a conventional eight-sided octabox. More ribs also meant more moving points to coordinate. The mechanism had to guide all 16 ribs while maintaining a rigid circular base when deployed and a compact, flat profile when closed.
Multiple failures before the original design
The finished product did not emerge from a single prototype. Geekoto’s team went through multiple unsuccessful versions while working through the rod channels, locking geometry, metal construction, and repeatability of the folding action.
Those failures were part of the design process. Each one showed the engineers where the rods resisted movement, where tolerances needed adjustment, or where a mechanism that worked once would not survive the repeated setups and teardowns expected by working photographers.
The result was the original GeekMod system: a full aluminum fold-flat clamshell base with rods that stay installed, interchangeable mounting options, and rapid deployment for studio and location work.
Recognized in PPA’s 2024 Hot Ones
The design received independent industry recognition when the Geekoto GeekMod System was selected for Professional Photographer magazine’s 2024 Hot Ones buyers guide from Professional Photographers of America.
In its Lighting and Modifiers selection, the magazine highlighted the system’s sub-three-second deployment, single-click fold-flat operation, clamshell base, and range of modifier shapes.
PPA later conducted a hands-on evaluation. Reviewer Betsy Finn noted that Geekoto’s softboxes stored in a slim rectangular bag about two inches thick, praised the quick-release and interchangeable mounting rings, and reported that the modifiers remained well constructed through repeated setups and teardowns. Why full aluminum construction matters
The fold-flat base is not treated as a disposable convenience feature. Geekoto retained full aluminum construction to provide a rigid deployed ring, dependable locking action, and durability for repeated professional use.
The engineering challenge was balancing that construction with practical weight and price. The system needed to remain portable enough for location photographers while still feeling like professional equipment—not a lightweight plastic compromise.
V2: customer feedback becomes engineering input
Innovation did not stop when the original design reached production. Geekoto continued gathering feedback from photographers who used the modifiers at weddings, portraits, events, studios, and traveling productions.
That feedback shaped the current V2 generation. The updated mechanism is easier to open, adds a double-handle design for improved control, and locks the mount securely into place. Geekoto accomplished those changes while retaining full aluminum construction and keeping the product’s weight and price close to the original generation.
The result can be seen in products such as the GEEK MOD S26 PRO V2, GEEK MOD E36 V2, and the full-size GEEK MOD X48 PRO V2. The design principle remains the same: less time fighting equipment, less storage volume, and more time creating light.
Built to keep evolving
GeekMod is not a finished chapter. As a family company with direct ties between its customers, designers, and manufacturing team, Geekoto can continue refining the system instead of treating the original patent as the end of development.
The first fold-flat concept solved the storage problem. The original production model proved the mechanism. V2 made the interaction easier and more secure. Future improvements will continue to follow the same process: listen to working creators, identify the friction, test repeatedly, and build the solution without abandoning durability or accessibility.
